macOS software upgrades and updates are installed using one of the following methods:
  • Native software update framework

  • macOS installer applications (i.e., Install Assistant application)

Historically, major software upgrades have been delivered using the Install Assistant application. In macOS 12.3 or later, Apple offers a new software upgrade path to macOS 13 that functions like a software update. This path does not require computers to download the full installer application or users to authenticate as administrators.

Jamf Pro supports the ability to defer the availability of macOS software upgrades for up to 90 days using a configuration profile. macOS software upgrades and updates can only be deferred with a configuration profile.
