How to Use This Guide

For the best learning experience, follow the topics in order using the Contents panel on the left (mobile users: tap Table of Contents). Each topic builds on the previous one to guide you through the complete workflow. You can also use the search box in the top-right corner to find specific topics quickly.

This guide includes step-by-step workflows required to use the IEEE 802.1X port-based network access control standard to provide protected authentication for secure network traffic over a LAN or WLAN network. Configured 802.1X infrastructure settings are distributed to managed computers and mobile devices using configuration profiles in Jamf Pro.

You can use one of the following WPA2-enterprise authentication protocols, with or without the use of Microsoft Active Directory, to verify the identity of a computer or mobile device when using 802.1X:

  • PEAP is the protected extensible authentication protocol (PEAP) that allows users to authenticate using a username and password.

  • TLS is the transport layer security (TLS) protocol that allows users to authenticate using a certificate.

Choose your authentication method based on what your organization allows.
