Creating a Mobile Device Configuration Profile with a Wi-Fi Payload for Return to Service

You can create a configuration profile with a Wi-Fi payload for use with the Return to Service workflow in the Jamf Pro API. Jamf recommends that the configuration profile only contain this singular payload scoped to devices you intend to erase and re-enroll with Jamf Pro.

Known Issue

These instructions are for environments that use a network with a personal security type encryption, such as WPA2 Personal. If your environment requires an enterprise security type with an 802.1x RADIUS server, consider the following known issue and associated workaround:

[PI138489] When configuring Return to Service for mobile devices, only configuration profiles with single payloads are displayed, which prevents organizations whose networks require additional payloads for authentication from using Return to Service. Workaround: Create a configuration profile with a single Wi-Fi payload, then configure Return to Service with that configuration profile. Then, edit the configuration profile and add additional payloads.

  1. In Jamf Pro, click Devices in the sidebar.
  2. Click Configuration profiles in the sidebar.
  3. In the General payload, enter a name for the profile and configure other settings on the pane as needed.
  4. Click the Wi-Fi payload, and then click Configure.
  5. Configure the settings for your Wi-Fi network as needed.
  6. Click the Scope tab, and then configure the target devices or group you intend to use in your Return to Service workflow.
  7. Click Save .
  8. In the address bar of your browser, copy the ID number of this configuration profile. You will need this to create a Return to Service configuration in the Jamf Pro API.
    The URL looks similar to the following: 
    https://mycompany.jamfcloud.com/iOSConfigurationProfiles.html?id=3&o=r&side-tabs=Wi-Fi
    Important:

    After you apply the ID of this configuration profile to a Return to Service configuration, you can no longer delete this profile in the Jamf Pro API or the Jamf Pro interface.

The profile is distributed to the devices in the scope.

You can now create a Return to Service configuration in the Jamf Pro API.
