Requirements
  • Mobile devices with iOS 26 or later, or iPadOS 26 or later, enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment

  • Mobile devices assigned to Apple School Manager

  • An Automated Device Enrollment profile configured for mobile devices in Jamf School

  • Proper app scoping and volume licensing assignment are required to preserve managed apps during the migration process
    Important:

Managed apps installed by the original MDM server that lack proper scoping and licensing during enrollment to the new MDM server will be automatically deleted by the operating system during migration. This deletion can result in app data loss if the new Jamf School instance is not configured to reinstall the same managed apps during the enrollment process.

Mobile devices enrolled with the original MDM server using Return to Service with app preservation settings are not eligible for MDM server migration using Apple School Manager deadlines.
  1. In Jamf School, navigate to Profiles > Automated Device Enrollment Profiles in the sidebar.
  2. Click the Automated Device Enrollment profile for mobile devices you want to edit.
  3. Next to Await final configuration, select the Wait for the configuration to be applied before continuing the Setup Assistant checkbox.
  4. Select the Install apps before finishing configuration checkbox.
  5. (Optional) Next to Default profile, select the Make this the default profile for iOS devices from the following Automated Device Enrollment accounts: checkbox.
  6. Select the checkboxes next to each account where you want this profile to be the default.
    Note:

Jamf recommends configuring this setting so the profile is automatically synced to Apple School Manager. This enables all devices that are newly added to the Jamf School server in Apple School Manager to be assigned the profile and eliminates the need to scope individual devices.

  7. Click Save.
  8. In Apple School Manager, click Devices in the sidebar and select the devices you want to migrate.

For more information on selecting individual devices for migration, see Migrate a single device to a new device management service in the Apple School Manager User Guide.

For more information on selecting multiple devices for migration, see Migrate multiple devices to a new device management service in the Apple School Manager User Guide.

  9. Navigate to Assign Device Management and choose the destination MDM server from the Device Management Service pop-up menu.
  10. Click Add Deadline, and select the date and time for the device to automatically migrate to the destination MDM server if the device's user does not initiate the migration earlier.
    Note:

If the Add Deadline option is unavailable, the device is ineligible for this migration workflow.

  11. Click Continue, and then click Confirm.
Device users receive an Enrollment Required prompt to enroll the device in a different device management service. After the user clicks Start Enrollment, a Restart Required prompt displays. If the user clicks Not Now, the user is prompted periodically until the deadline. After reaching the deadline, the user is required to complete the migration.
Note:

The user can also initiate the migration via the Settings app.

After the new MDM profile is installed on the device, Jamf School holds the device in Setup Assistant while delivering app installation commands. During this hold period, all previously managed apps that receive installation commands will have their app and app data preserved throughout the migration process. However, apps that were previously managed by the original MDM but do not receive an app installation command from Jamf School at this time will be removed by the operating system.
