Devices check in to Jamf School to check for pending MDM commands, profiles, and activity. For more information about device check-ins, see Device Check-in Frequency. When a device fails to check in to Jamf School after a period of time, the device will be marked as inactive. A device may not check in to Jamf School because it is turned off, not connected to a network, or connected to a network that does not allow connection to Jamf School. To view the device's status, navigate to Devices > Inventory in the sidebar and click the device.

The maximum length of time a device can fail to check in before it is marked as inactive is 8 weeks. You can configure how long after a device checks in that it is marked as inactive in Jamf School by navigating to Organization > Settings > General > Device Management. After the device checks in, it should be marked as active again. If the device checks in and is still marked as inactive, you can try the following resolutions to fix the device status.
