You can configure settings for iPads with Shared iPad enabled in Jamf School.

Requirements
Supervised iPads with Shared iPad enabled and iOS 9.3 or later enrolled via Automated Device Enrollment (For more information, see Automated Device Enrollment.)
Note:You can also configure the storage quota per user on Shared iPad devices with iOS or iPadOS 13.4 or later by using the Shared iPad User Storage Quota pop-up menu in the Automated Device Enrollment profile settings. This overrides the Max. number of users setting when it is configured.
Teachers and classes synced to
Apple School Manager (For more information, see
Syncing with Apple School Manager.)
Note:If an iPad is not configured for temporary sessions, students must have an Apple Account created in Apple School Manager.
An iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 (or later), or iPad mini (4th generation or later)
iPads with at least 32 GB of storage
Note:On devices with 32 GB of storage, each user needs a minimum of 1 GB. On devices with 64 GB of storage, each user needs a minimum of 2 GB.
- In Jamf School, navigate to in the sidebar.
- Click the Shared iPad payload.
- Enter the name that you want to display on the sign in screen in the Organization name field.
- To allow teachers to log in to the iPad with their Managed Apple Account and populate the Classroom app with information from Apple School Manager, select the Allow teacher users to sign in on iPads with Shared iPad enabled checkbox.
Note:The Automatically configure Apple Classroom based on Classes and Users in Jamf School setting must be disabled in the Apple Classroom settings for this feature to work.
- Create an Automated Device Enrollment profile by navigating to .
Note:If all of your devices are using Shared iPad, create a single Automated Device Enrollment profile. If only some of your devices are using Shared iPad, create a separate Automated Device Enrollment profile and a separate MDM server in Apple School Manager for the Shared iPad devices.
- Click +iOS.
- Enter a profile name in the Name field, such as Shared iPad Devices.
- (Optional) Enter a support phone number and department name that users can reach out to if they need assistance during enrollment.
- Select the Enable Shared iPad checkbox and then configure the following settings:
To only allow temporary sessions, select the
Only allow Temporary Sessions checkbox. Temporary sessions don't require any login credentials and users are logged in to the devices as guests (iPadOS 14.5 or later). Temporary session configurations for Shared iPad devices can be changed post-enrollment.
Warning:When a user is logged in to a Shared iPad in a temporary session, no data from the session is saved.
To set the period of inactivity in a temporary session before a user is logged out, select the Log users out of a temporary session after the specified period of inactivity (in seconds) checkbox and enter the number of seconds.
To set the period of inactivity before a user is logged out, select the Log users out of a session after the specified period of inactivity (in seconds) checkbox and enter the number of seconds.
To change storage settings, use the
Storage Configuration pop-up menu to choose one of the following configurations:
- Default Users and Storage —The iPad calculates the optimal number of users (up to 10) and storage allocated to each user based on the storage capacity of the device.
- Resident Users —Allows you to set a maximum number of users that can log in to the iPad and once that maximum is reached, no other users can log in until the device is wiped.
- Storage Quota —Allows you to set the maximum amount of storage each user is assigned and once that maximum is reached, no other users can log in until data is deleted from the device.
Note:Configuring a storage quota for Shared iPad devices with temporary sessions enabled is only available for iPadOS 17 or later.
Best Practice:Jamf recommends choosing Default Users and Storage until your organization has determined its Shared iPad needs.
To add suggested
Managed Apple Account Default Domains that will display on the login screen, click
+ Add a domain and enter the domain names. Each school domain must include the top-level domain, such as
.com,
.edu,
.org, and so on:
Example:Yourschooldomain.com, Yourschooldomain.de,Yourschooldomain.edu, Yourschooldomain.no
Note:If you add more than three domains, the system will display a maximum of three suggested domains to the user. As the user begins to enter a domain name, the three suggested domains are dynamically updated to match the entered characters.
- Click Save.
You can now add Shared iPad devices to classes.
