To prevent students from using certain apps, add prohibited mobile apps to the app blocklist in the Safe Internet portal. Jamf Safe Internet prevents the blocked apps from communicating with the internet or web-based services. You can also choose to specify allowed apps, which will not be blocked by Jamf Safe Internet web protection policies.

The app block and allow list applies to all supported devices enrolled with Jamf Safe Internet.

Requirements
  1. Identify the apps you want to block or allow and create a list.
  2. Locate the bundle ID for each application.

    Jamf Safe Internet uses bundle IDs to identify and block or allow app traffic. An app's bundle ID is its unique identifier within the Apple ecosystem. Search the internet for a bundle ID finder to identify the bundle IDs used by apps in your environment.

  3. In the Safe Internet portal, go to Policies > App blocking.
  4. In the Specify apps field, add the bundle IDs in a comma-separated list.
    Example:
    This example list blocks these apps: Tik Tok, Snapchat, FaceTime, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
    com.zhiliaoapp.musically, com.toyopagroup.picaboo, com.apple.facetime, com.burbn.instagram, com.atebits.Tweetie2
  5. Select Block or Allow.
  6. Click Add app blocks.

Each app is added to your App details list, where you can choose to switch between Block and Allow as needed.

Students can still download blocked apps, but all web traffic in the apps is blocked. Web traffic from allowed apps will not be blocked by any Jamf Safe Internet web protection policies.

Note:Blocked app traffic is reported with hostnames, not bundle IDs, and some apps have many associated hostnames. For example, if you block Youtube's bundle ID (com.google.ios.youtube), reported events may use derivatives such as googlevideo.com, youtubei.googleapis.com, ytimg.com, or similar.
