Each network connection interface on a device has an unique MAC address. Most modems and routers provide the ability to restrict access only to a certain set of defined MAC addresses. Mi-Fi devices can use this functionality to restrict access to only MAC addresses that belong to Windows devices that are enrolled with Jamf Protect's internet content filtering and usage controls service.

  1. Connect the target Windows device to the target Mi-Fi device.
  2. On the target Windows device, obtain and make note of the following network details:
    • The MAC address for each network connection interface that can be used to connect to the Mi-Fi device at any time

    • The default gateway IP address for the connected target Mi-Fi device
      Note:

You can obtain these details via the target Windows device's network settings, or through command prompt using the following command: ipconfig /all

  3. On the target Windows device, open a web browser (such as Microsoft Edge) and enter the Mi-Fi default gateway IP address that you recorded previously. When prompted, enter the default administrator login details, as provided by the Mi-Fi device manufacturer.
  4. After you've logged into the control panel, locate the Security settings for the Mi-Fi device and navigate to MAC Address Filtering (or equivalent).
  5. Add the target Windows device's MAC addresses that you recorded previously, ensuring that:
    • MAC Address Filtering as a whole is set to Enabled (if applicable).

    • Each MAC address entry added is marked as being Allowed (if applicable).

  6. Click Apply/Save (or equivalent) to apply the new settings.

Only devices enrolled with Jamf Protect's internet content filtering and usage controls service can connect via the Mi-Fi device.

Only the target Windows device can connect to and use the Mi-Fi device's internet connection.

Specific instructions will vary between different Mi-Fi devices from different manufacturers. For a representative example, refer to Huawei's MAC address filtering setup guide for their B2268H gateway.
Note:

Jamf recommends that you change the default administrator login details for all Mi-Fi devices, to ensure that any custom restriction settings cannot be modified later by end users.
