Unmanaging mobile devices in Jamf Pro removes the MDM profile from the devices. This stops all communication between the devices and Jamf Pro, ending all management capabilities.

  1. If Activation Lock is enabled on the devices, clear Activation Lock by doing one of the following:
    • Sign out of iCloud on the device. Signing out of iCloud effectively disables Activation Lock, which is helpful if user-based Activation Lock was allowed and Find My was signed in.

    • Send the Wipe Device remote command and select the "Clear Activation Lock (supervised iOS devices only)" option. For instructions, see "Clear Activation Lock" in the Leveraging Apple's Activation Lock Feature with Jamf Pro article.

      Note:

Sending a Wipe Device command will remove the device from management in addition to erasing all content and settings. If you send this command to clear Activation Lock prior to performing the subsequent steps on this page, skip step 3.

    • Send the Set Activation Lock remote command and select the "Disable and prevent Activation Lock" option.

For more information, see Activation Lock on Apple devices in Apple Platform Deployment.

  2. Release the devices from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

This prevents devices from automatically re-enrolling with Jamf Pro the next time Setup Assistant runs.

For instructions, see the following documentation:
  3. In Jamf Pro, use the Unmanage Device remote command to remove devices from management.

For more information on sending remote commands, see Sending Remote Commands to a Mobile Device.

  4. (Optional) Delete the device records from Jamf Pro.

Deleting records for unmanaged devices helps ensure your device inventory is accurate.

For more information, see Deleting a Mobile Device from Jamf Pro.
