Sending update commands via managed software updates to mobile devices belonging to smart or static groups results in specific device behavior depending on the type of update command. Each command and their behavior on the end user's device is defined below:

  • Download only β€”The update downloads on the target device, but no install action takes place. The update is made available to install in Settings. Further action is required by the end user to initiate the installation of the update.

  • Download and install β€”The update downloads on the target device and installation is automatically initiated. The end user will be prompted to enter their passcode to initiate installation of the update if a passcode is present on the device.
  • Download and schedule to install (via declarative device management) β€”A declaration containing an update command is sent to the device. The update executes at the scheduled time based on the local time of the device. After the update completes, the device proactively reports to Jamf Pro. Because an authorization token is generated with the users passcode, the end user does not need to unlock the device for the update to install. No action from the end user is necessary.
