You can use Jamf Parent to choose which apps your child can use on their school-issued device by configuring allowed app categories, enabling App Lock, or restricting built-in apps. The following features are available to manage app usage on your child's device:
  • Allowed App CategoriesAllow or restrict apps based on app category, such as social media, games, and shopping
  • App LockTemporarily limit device access to only specified apps. All other apps are unavailable during the set time period.
  • Restrict device functionalityAllow or restrict built-in apps, such as Camera, Safari, and FaceTime
  1. Tap the child's device you want to apply app restrictions to.
  2. If you want to restrict apps by app category, tap Allowed Apps and use the switches under Allowed App Categories to restrict app categories.

If the switch next to an app category is enabled, apps in that category are allowed on the child's device. You can tap the switch to disable it and restrict the app category. The settings are applied to the child's device immediately. If a child's device is offline, the settings will be applied the next time the device is online.

The Allowed Apps screen with the Enable App Lock button, Restrict device functionality button, and a list of allowed app categories with a switch displayed next to each category.
    Note:
    • When restricting apps by category, apps are restricted based on the category assigned by their developers in the App Store. To determine an app's category, locate the app in the App Store and review the app details.

    • If an app belongs to a category that is not supported in Jamf Parent, you cannot restrict the app by category. Instead, use the Restrict device functionality feature to restrict the specific app.

  3. If you want to temporarily restrict the child's access to only specific apps for a set amount of time, tap Allowed Apps, then tap Enable App Lock and do the following:
    1. Select the duration of time, in hours and minutes, during which only specified apps will be available on the device.
The App Lock screen with a list of apps and the option to configure the duration of time those apps will be available.
    2. Tap each app that you want the child's device to have access to. A checkmark displays next to each app that will be available on the child's device.
      Note:

If you allow only one app, that app launches on the child's device and they cannot exit the app until the App Lock timer expires.

    3. Tap Done to save your selections. App Lock is immediately applied to the child's device and a countdown timer displays the time remaining. To modify the specified apps, tap Change allowed apps. To clear App Lock from the device before the configured time is over, tap Disable App Lock.
  4. If you want to restrict built-in apps, tap Allowed Apps, then tap Restrict device functionality and use the switches to restrict built-in apps, and tap Done.

If the switch next to a built-in app is enabled, that app is allowed on the child's device. You can tap the switch to disable it and restrict the built-in app. The settings are applied to the child's device immediately. If a child's device is offline, the settings will be applied the next time the device is online.

The Allowed Apps screen with a list of apps and a switch displayed next to each app name.

If app restrictions are applied to a child's device and then removed, the changes may take several minutes to be applied to the device.
