You can edit device names from previously assigned or default names in Jamf Now. If the device is a supervised iPad or iPhone, or a Mac with macOS 10.10 or later, the modified name can be synced to the device. The device also uses this synced name to identify itself in AirDrop.

If you are using Automated Device Enrollment to enroll devices, you can also modify unmanaged devices from the Automated Device Enrollment page. If synced to the device from Jamf Now, the modified name will be applied during enrollment.

  1. Log in to Jamf Now.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If renaming a supervised device, click on the device you want to rename.

    • If editing an unmanaged device name via Automated Device Enrollment, click the Auto-Enrollment tab, and then click View Devices.

  3. Click on the Action pop-up menu (•••) in the top-right corner and select Edit name.
  4. Enter the modified device name.
  5. (Optional) Select the Apply this name to the device with each sync checkbox to sync the modified name to the device from Jamf Now.
    Note:

Only supervised mobile devices and computers with macOS 10.10 or later can by synced.

  6. Click Save Changes.

On an iPad or iPhone, the device name can be found by navigating to Settings > General > About.

On a Mac, the device name can be found by navigating to System Settings > Sharing (macOS 13 or later) or System Preferences > Sharing (macOS 12 or earlier).
