Jamf recommends using volume purchasing for app deployment. If you decide to deploy apps without volume purchasing, there are certain requirements and limitations.

Requirements

Before app deployment:
  • Users must be signed in to a device's App Store with an Apple Account.

Note:An Apple Account cannot be signed in for purchases on more than ten devices at a time.

If you create an Apple Account in Apple Business or Apple School Manager, it is created as a Managed Apple Account. Managed Apple Accounts cannot be used to deploy apps without volume purchasing. For more information about Managed Apple Accounts, see Intro to Managed Apple Accounts in Apple Business in the Apple Business User Guide.

  • Users must open the App Store on the device and agree to the App Store Terms and Conditions.

After the app is deployed from Jamf Now, users must agree to the initial install of each new app on the device.

Limitation

Using Jamf Now to automatically update apps requires device-based app assignment. Jamf Now cannot control automatic app updates for apps deployed without volume purchasing.

For more information on how to send an app deployment command, see Deploying an App for a Single Device.
