Key points

  • An app's page in the App Store will include a description and reviews from other users.

  • Each app page also has a section on app privacy which contains information on what data may be tracked about the user.

  • An Apple ID is required to install apps from the App Store.

    • You will be prompted to sign in with an Apple ID, if not already signed in, during app installation.

  • To download an Apple approved app from the App Store:

    1. Open the App Store.

    2. Find an app you want.

    3. Click the Get button, or price button for paid apps.

    4. Confirm installation.

  • To install an app from the internet:

    1. Download the software from the developer.

    2. Open the disk image or installer package and follow on-screen instructions.

  • Gatekeeper is a built-in macOS security technology that reviews downloaded software from outside of the App Store for malicious content.

  • On iOS and iPadOS, long press on an app icon to rearrange apps, remove them from the Home Screen, or delete the app.

  • To delete an app from macOS, find the app in your Applications folder and drag it to the trash.

    • Some apps might provide an uninstaller to ensure that all files, including those that may be outside of the Applications directory, are removed.

  • Jamf Pro administrators can deploy apps to devices or restrict specific apps from being downloaded on devices, eliminating the need for users to use personal Apple IDs.

    1. Browse popular apps and review the app pages.

    2. View what data is linked to users.

  2. Search for a free app to install.

    1. Click Get and install the chosen app.

    2. Sign in with an Apple ID if you haven't already.

  3. On your test computer, download Firefox from mozilla.org.

    1. Install Firefox by finding the disk image in your downloads folder, double-clicking it, and following the on-screen instructions.

    2. Once Firefox has been installed, click the Eject button next to the installer in the Finder sidebar.
