Goal

Navigate the Settings app in iOS and iPadOS to customize a device and find device information.

Key points

  • The Settings app contains important device information as well as preferences and customization options.

    • The Settings app for iPadOS is functionally and organizationally similar to iOS.

  • Signing in with an Apple ID allows the use of Apple services like iCloud and the App Store.

    • Using an Apple ID is optional, but certain features will not be available to the user if they are not signed in.

  • Jamf Pro can be used to customize and restrict many settings in iOS and iPadOS, helping enforce organizational standards.

  • Commonly accessed settings, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, are immediately available near the top of the settings list.

  • The following information can be found in the General section of Settings:

    • The About section includes the name of the device, the software version, storage capacity, and more.

    • The Software Update section is where automatic updates can be enabled and available updates can be downloaded and installed.

    • The Transfer & Reset iPad/iPhone section includes reset options to prepare to transfer information to a new device or erase all content.

  • Touch ID & Passcode (or Face ID & Passcode) allows users to customize settings such as:

    • Which services can use Touch ID or Face ID

    • Add or change a passcode

    • How long until a passcode is required after a device is locked

  2. Software update settings and information can be found in the Settings app under General > Software Updates. Here automatic updates can be turned on or off.
