Goal

Explore the differences between managed and unmanaged apps in Jamf Pro. Deploy apps to computers or mobile devices from Jamf Pro.

Video

Key points

  • App Store apps can be distributed from Jamf Pro to enrolled computers or mobile devices.

  • Two distribution methods are available when deploying apps:

    • "Make Available in Self Service" allows users to download and install from the Jamf Self Service app.

    • "Install Automatically/Prompt Users to Install" automatically installs apps with managed distribution or prompts the user to install it with their Apple ID.

  • Some app data is populated in Jamf Pro from the App Store.

    • Jamf Pro can be configured to make scheduled syncs with the App Store to pull in updated app information.

  • App Store apps installed by Jamf Pro can be updated automatically.

  • Making an app managed allows Jamf Pro to have more control over the app.

  • Managed distribution allows licenses from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager to be distributed to enrolled devices.

    • This allows for app deployments that require zero user interaction or use of a personal Apple ID.

Review

To view answers, click arrow next to each question.

  1. If an app is made available in Jamf Self Service, it will only show up within the Self Service app for users to download. If "Install Automatically/Prompt Users to Install" is selected, the app will either be installed automatically in the background if using managed distribution, or the user will be prompted to install it with their own Apple ID.
  2. Managing apps provides more options to administrators, like preventing the removal of apps or allowing backup of app data.
  3. Zero-touch app deployment requires managed distribution and an app license purchased through Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, distributed with "Install Automatically/Prompt Users to Install" selected.
