Goal

Create static and smart groups in Jamf Pro for computers and mobile devices.

  • Device groups are used to organize computers and mobile devices in Jamf Pro.

  • There are two types of groups for computers and mobile devices in Jamf Pro: static groups and smart groups.

  • Static groups have fixed membership. Devices must be added or removed manually.

    • Examples of static device groups include:

      • A cart of iPads for a classroom

      • A computer lab full of Mac Pros

      • Test devices

  • Smart groups are created with a set of criteria and dynamically populated with devices.

    • Examples of smart groups include:

      • iPads with the latest version of iOS installed

      • Mac computers that do not have FileVault enabled

      • iOS devices that have not updated inventory in more than two weeks

  • For smart mobile device groups, wallpapers can be sent to devices using the Automated Management tab.

  • Group membership can be monitored from the Jamf Pro Dashboard.

  1. How is the membership of a static group determined?
    Members of static groups must be manually added by a Jamf Pro administrator.
  2. How is the membership of a smart group determined?
    Members are dynamically added to or removed from the group based on the criteria set for that smart group.
  3. What additional option is available for smart mobile device groups?
    Smart mobile device groups can automatically set a wallpaper for members using the Automated Management tab in the group's settings.

Practice

  1. Create a static mobile device group and add a test device to it.

    1. Navigate to Devices > Static Device Groups.

    2. Click New to create a new group.

    3. Enter an appropriate display name for the group.

    4. On the Assignments tab, select the checkboxes for all devices you wish to add to the group.

    5. Click Save in the bottom right to save the group.

  2. Create a smart computer group that finds all computers without FileVault enabled.

    1. Navigate to Computers > Smart Computer Groups.

    2. Click New to create a new group.

    3. Enter an appropriate display name for the group.

    4. On the Criteria tab, select Add to add a new criteria.

    5. Click Choose next to the File Vault 2 Status criteria.

    6. Click the Ellipsis (...) to the right of the Value field.

    7. Click Choose to the right of No Partitions Encrypted.

    8. Click Save in the bottom right to save the group.
