Goal

Create categories to label and organize items within Jamf Pro and Jamf Self Service. Label computers and devices with building and department information for easier grouping and scoping.

Video

Key points

  • Categories help organize items like apps, configuration profiles, and policies in Jamf Pro and Self Service.
    • Category priority is used to determine the order in which categories display in Self Service.

    • A lower number equals a higher priority.

  • Buildings and departments help organize devices in Jamf Pro.

    • They can be used as targets and exclusions when configuring scope.

    • They are also criteria for advanced searches and smart groups.

  • A device can be assigned to a building and/or a department from its inventory record.

    • Each device can be assigned to no more than one building and one department at a time.

    • Multiple devices can be assigned in bulk via mass actions, inventory preload, or other methods.
