Device groups in Elevate enable you to organize computers and mobile devices that share similar attributes, such as computers used by a specific department or mobile devices running a certain software version. You can use these groups as a way of simply organizing your devices or as a basis for configuring the scope of certain management capabilities like blueprints or compliance benchmarks.

Elevate offers two types of device groups:

  • Smart group —Smart groups are based on specified criteria and have dynamic memberships.
  • Static group —Static groups have fixed memberships that you manually assign. A static group can contain computers or mobile devices, but not both.

Smart group memberships are updated each time any of the following events happen:

  • Computers submit inventory to Elevate and meet or fail to meet the specified criteria.

    Note:

Some inventory attributes are updated when computers check in, rather than when they submit inventory (e.g., Last Check-in). Smart groups containing criteria based on these attributes update memberships each time computers check in.

  • Mobile devices contact Elevate and meet or fail to meet the specified criteria.

  • User information is edited.

  1. In Elevate, click Devices in the sidebar.
  2. Click Groups.
  3. Click Create new group.
  4. Select the type of group you would like to create.
  5. Enter a display name for the group in the Group Name field.
  6. Enter a brief explanation of the content or purpose of the group in the Description field.
  7. If you created a static group, manually select the devices you would like to add to the group and click Save.
  8. If you created a smart group, do the following:
    1. Select Computers or Mobile Devices
    2. Click Add Criteria.
    3. Select an attribute from the pop-up menu (e.g., Application Title).
    4. Select a condition (e.g., is).
    5. Select a value (e.g., Google Chrome)
    6. Add additional criteria by subsequently clicking Add Criteria.
      Note:

Using the example attribute, condition, and value from the above steps would create a smart group for devices that have Google Chrome installed. If a device is a part of the group and Google Chrome is then uninstalled, it would automatically be removed from the group upon the device's next inventory update.

  9. Click Save.
